Introduction

The Fire Lookout Tower of Veszprém is one of the city's most famous landmarks, towering over the southwestern end of the castle. The 48-meter-high tower rests on medieval foundations and got its current shape in 1814, when it was raised in late Baroque style and fitted with a circular balcony.

A night watchman once kept watch over the city from here, but today, the clock on the late Baroque style tower plays verbunkos (military recruitment) music by Antal Csermák every hour, and every quarter hour is marked by its sounds. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Veszprém and the Bakony Hills from the tower. Veszprém Pantheon is also visible in the garden of the fire watchtower.

Location & Accessibility

The Fire Lookout Tower is located at the southwestern end of Veszprém Castle, along the castle wall, and is easily recognizable by its cylindrical shape. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the city center and the castle district, with a staircase leading up to the entrance from Vár Street. Vehicle access is permitted with authorization. For parking, the surrounding streets are recommended, as well as the Szeglethy József Street and Bagolyvár parking garages.

From the bus station, the tower is reachable within a 20-minute walk. If arriving by train, take local bus lines 2 or 5 and get off at “Veszprémi Petőfi Színház,” or take line 4 and get off at “Megyeház tér” — both stops are about a 10-minute walk from the tower.

The entrance is accessible via stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Tickets are available at Várkapu Gift Shop (4 Vár Street).
